In the blistering heat of an Australian spring, in a small town, Esther, a 12 year old girl, disappears on her way home from school.  As her friends try to find her, police officers arrive from Sydney to investigate.  Everyone in the small town knows something, and most of them are hiding something, sometimes dangerous things.  Different characters provide their points of view as the question of what happened to Esther takes on greater urgency.  A riveting book that's a propulsive page-turner.
