TItus is the first ever African American sheriff of a county in rural Virginia where there are hardly any serious crimes. Until, of course, a teacher is murdered, apparently by one of his students, and then the student is killed by the sheriff's deputies. In the course of his investigation, Titus unearths disturbing evidence that there may be a serial killer operating in plain sight in the area, a killer connected to the local church. And, as if that's not enough, a local right wing group wants to have a parade to celebrate the town's Confederate history at the same time. This book won the Edgar Award for best novel in 2024.
