Saturday, May 18, 2024 - 11:00am to 12:30pm

Join the Field Notes Book Group for a rousing discussion of our May book, A Fever in the Heartland: The Ku Klux Klan's Plot to Take Over America, and the Woman Who Stopped them, by Timothy Egan.  Copies of the book are available at the circulation desk.

The 1920's saw a phenomenal growth of the KKK outside of its southern roots, expanding especially into the Midwest and West, led by a charismatic charlatan, D. C. Stephenson, who became Grand Dragon of Indiana and brought the power of the state under his and the KKK's sway, until he went too far and was caught by the criminal justice system.  A nonfiction telling of this story that reads like a great novel, A Fever in the Heartland illuminates a dark and mostly unknown period of American history.

Join us for discussion and refreshments.
